AAU Nationals: Shelden Williams

Posted Aug 3, 2001

I think he matches up great against bigger, slower men. He definitely has the body to bang down low defense, and would absolutely abuse and foul out most centers on the other end of the court.

It's very easy to see why Shelden Williams is a highly regarded prospect. It's hard to imagine that this guy is a teenager when you look at him. He's extremely well built and carries himself like a man - both on and off the court. He may not be as technically skilled as May or as versatile a defender as Francis, but he's not far away and adds his own skills to the mix. In particular, Williams probably has the best looking shot of all the big men. He gets a nice rotation on the ball and drops it all the way out to three-point range.

You also have to love his silent nastiness. He's an aggressive workhorse who just gets the job done. You may not see fancy low post moves, but, when he wants to go to the hoop, he will get there one way or another. If not, you will see him at the foul line. I can't see why he reportedly doesn't want to play center in college. I think he matches up great against bigger, slower men. He definitely has the body to bang down low defense, and would absolutely abuse and foul out most centers on the other end of the court.

Sean May stole the show in their big matchup, but it's important to note that Shelden didn't play nearly as many minutes and they only matched up against each other sparingly. For most of the game, the two went back and forth matching one good play with another.

Shelden did have some bad luck in seemingly getting banged up in almost every game he played. However, he always was able to come back, which is a tribute to his toughness.

Can he improve? Yes. He is not a dominant shot blocker and should work on getting better rebounding position instead of just relying on his size. It's far from a liability, but a guy with this much physical gifts should strive for a totally dominant package. Nevertheless, I'd take him in a heartbeat as is. Unfortunately, it may be an NBA team taking him sooner than we think.
